When I was a child costumes were made from articles of clothing we could find in our Dad or Mom’s closet. Now, it would seem you must spend quite a bit of money and find just the right costume before you head out to beg for treats. When did all this change? When did it become necessary to spend a fortune on a Halloween costume? What happened to children’s imagination and creativity? It was fun for us to become anything we envisioned. A Princess, a hobo, a ghost, a cowboy! For all the wonderful and unique experiences afforded children today, I feel that they have lost their sense of creativity. Instead of allowing our children to use their imagination, we tell them what to do and how to do it. There isn’t any down time. Their lives are filled with running from one activity to another. I suppose it’s just easier to buy the Halloween Costume on the way home from an activity. I vote for allowing our children to once again be truly creative and have time to sit and dream and imagine what they’d like to be for Halloween! |
